Structured literacy in practice

Structured literacy teaches reading explicitly (skills are taught directly, not discovered) and systematically (in a logical sequence, from simple to complex). It includes decodable texts — passages that use only the phonics patterns students have learned — so kids practice decoding instead of guessing from pictures. Approaches like Orton-Gillingham apply these principles, especially for students with dyslexia.

The shift from balanced literacy

Much of the field has moved away from balanced literacy and the three-cueing system (guessing words from meaning, syntax, or pictures) toward structured, evidence-aligned instruction.
